The Garage in San Francisco is literally just that a...garage...turned black box theater committed to presenting emerging artists in the bay area. The RAW program offers artists 12 weeks of free rehearsal space which culminates in 2 evening performances. I am thrilled to use this opportunity to further develop "Sleeping Palms" into an evening-length piece. In earlier incarnations it was performed as a solo with video, and as a solo with students of Moving Arts Dance Center.
I look forward to experiencing this new evolution with new dancers, some of whom I haven't even met yet. I will be approaching this project not in the traditional choreographer -dancer fashion where the choreographer comes in to teach the steps to the dancers. It will be a living, spontaneous exchange of ideas that will shift as the days go on until we find a truly genuine expression. The piece is loosely based on the economic crisis and what has changed in our lives, both positive and negative. What have we learned, what have we gained, what have we lost? The dancers will be encouraged to generate movement and develop ideas taken from their own experiences. Ultimately, the dance will be about us but with the desire that everyone will see themselves in us and relate to our stories.
Off to the studio...
Stay tuned for upcoming performances, dance and movement class offerings, and health and wellness events in the bay area:
